Lifeguard hours & beach safety
The Ocean City Beach Patrol guards the town’s 10 miles of beach every day from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., from Memorial Day weekend through the third Sunday after Labor Day. At 5:25 p.m. guards signal swimmers out of the water. Outside those dates and hours there are no lifeguards on duty, so the Beach Patrol’s rule applies: “Keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is in the stand.”
Rip currents are the biggest risk on the Atlantic side, even on calm, sunny days, and they are most common near jetties and piers. If you are caught in one, don’t swim against it: swim parallel to shore until you are out of the current, then angle back to the beach. Beach Patrol: 410-289-7556.

Where the camera is
The Commander sits directly on the Ocean City Boardwalk at 14th Street, in the heart of the boardwalk district. From here the Inlet, the amusement piers, and the south end of the Boardwalk are about 14 blocks south on foot, and the Roland E. Powell Convention Center (40th Street, bayside) is a short drive or Beach Bus ride north on Coastal Highway. Because the beach faces east, sunrise comes up right over the water in front of the hotel.
